DIY No Sew Fox Tails

Finally our Fantastic Mr. Fox costumes are coming along. I finished our fox ears last week and today our tails, so now I just have to get my mad thrift on to find Joel a suit that matches Foxy's and draft, sew and block print myself a dress before the 31st. Seems logical, right? I work better under pressure anyway ;)
So here it is- a super easy, quick, no sew tutorial to make your own faux-fur fox tail!
If you left an opening to stuff your tail, be sure to glue it up to avoid losing stuffing throughout your Halloween-ing. In case you're wondering, I used scrap faux fur to stuff my tail because I didn't have any cotton stuffing, but any sort of stuffing will do. When you're tail is finished, use a safety pin to attach it to your costume. And that's it! Fox tail in less than an hour!
Now if you'll excuse me- I have some thrifting to do!

Happy Crafting!

  1. really cool, and it doesn't look cheap or daggy :) how would you curve some points of the tail to make it look flowing in shape ? thanks :)

  2. I used a Fairgate Vary Form Curved Ruler, like this one

They have an interesting curve so you can create many different shapes with just one ruler. It is the primary curved ruler that I used in fashion design school for pattern making and comes in super handy!

  4. Hmm interesting. I think you could do that if you had the seam running down the front and back of the tail, instead of the sides like I did here. then you could just curve it up at the bottom to match the tail in the picture. Do you know what I mean?

  5. I was wondering how well does the hot glue hold up? Have you had any problems with hot glueing the fabric and then stuffing it?

  6. I found that the glue held really well- there were a few spots that I needed to fix up after glueing, but not because they fell apart, just because I missed them the first time glueing around. That being said, we only wore our tails out 2 times. But we went dancing and stuff and no problems- so I think they will hold up pretty well to wear and tear over time as well. :)

    1. Any local fabric or hobby stores should have some fur, or if you prefer to shop online, https://www.fabric.com has a good selection of faux furs to choose from :)

  8. Would sewing it up work with the faux fur fabric? I have several weeks, and am thinking it may make a better product if I have the time to do so.

    1. I bought a yard of orange and half a yard of white and had some leftover and I made two of each. So you could get away with half a yard of orange and quarter yard of white

    1. I used packing paper from any post office or dollar store-- but newspaper also works well!

  13. Hi, I'm halfway through this tail for my 6-year-old. I hand-sewed the white part on the orange already. My question is whether I am right that I should hot-glue the furry side edges together, against each other, and then turn it all back, right side out. That seems messy! With hot glue instead of sewing, do you not need to turn inside out to begin with? Hot glue novice... thanks!
